Self-sufficiency helps communities regain control

One of the most important ways that Aim for Change makes a difference in peoples’ lives – and the reason why we can support so many people in their education and livelihoods – is our promotion of self-sufficiency.

Early on in the charity’s work, gifts of animals including cows, pigs, sheep, goats and chicken gave people the opportunity to breed and sell their livestock to feed their families and pay for the education of their children.  For example, if a pig is given, it might breed in the region of eight piglets.

As the animals grow, we have always advised families to give two away to other families in areas, which have no animals.

We also recommend they sell two or three piglets, and keep the remainder of the litter for further breeding.
